Standard bathroom scales can be notoriously deceiving. If you start weight training and building muscle while burning body fat, the scale might not budge at all — or might even go up. That's why tracking your body fat percentage is a far superior measure of physical transformation.
Why Body Fat Percentage Matters More Than Scale Weight
Your total body weight is made up of two categories: fat mass (subcutaneous and visceral fat) and lean mass (muscle tissue, bones, organs, and water). Two people can weigh 180 lbs at the exact same height, yet one can be lean and muscular at 12% body fat while the other carries health risks at 30% body fat.
The U.S. Navy Circumference Method
While DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing tanks are expensive, the U.S. Navy Method requires only a simple soft tape measure and has been clinically proven to be accurate within 3-4% of DEXA scans.
- Men: Height, Neck Circumference (below the larynx), and Abdominal Circumference (at the belly button level).
- Women: Height, Neck Circumference, Waist Circumference (narrowest point), and Hip Circumference (widest point).
