Whether you are applying to colleges, applying for scholarships, or tracking academic progress, your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most critical academic metrics. However, understanding how letter grades translate into numerical points can be confusing.
Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA
There are two primary ways schools calculate GPA:
- Unweighted GPA (4.0 Scale): Treats all classes equally regardless of difficulty. The highest possible GPA is 4.0 (an A in every class).
- Weighted GPA (5.0 Scale): Gives extra point values for advanced courses like Honors (+0.5 point), Advanced Placement (AP +1.0 point), and International Baccalaureate (IB +1.0 point) to reward academic rigor.
Standard Grade Point Scale
Standard Letter Grade Conversion:
- A (90-100%): 4.0 Grade Points
- B (80-89%): 3.0 Grade Points
- C (70-79%): 2.0 Grade Points
- D (60-69%): 1.0 Grade Points
- F (Below 60%): 0.0 Grade Points
The GPA Formula
To calculate your overall GPA, multiply the point value of each grade by the credit hours for that course, sum the total quality points, and divide by total credit hours attempted:
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
